Holiday Power Outage at Atlanta Airport

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) airport suffered a holiday power outage at the Atlanta airport on Sunday Dec 17th, 2017. The 11 hour outage disrupted travel for thousands of passengers. Georgia Power’s investigation traced the blackout to a fire in electrical switchgear. But, the backup power cables were routed in the same tunnel and damaged by the same fire. The utility tunnel in question carries seven feeders from two separate substations to the airport.


ATL is the world’s busiest airport, carrying over 100 million passengers per year. The outage occurred during the busy holiday season, canceling over 1,100 flights Sunday and Monday. Meanwhile an estimated 30,000 people were at the airport, leaving them stranded.
