PG&E has changed the electric rates for all rate classes effective October 1st, 2016. If you are a non-PG&E customer, it’s a good time to refresh your memory about your rate.
Heavy rains started late last week causing multiple outages and power quality events.
As of 9:30am on Friday, October 14th 23,450 PG&E customers were without power. The majority of power loss was experienced in the North Bay and the East Bay.
“Most of the outages were weather related,” PG&E spokeswoman Abby Figueroa said. One cause of the outages is pole fires, which occur most often after long periods of no rain. The dust and dirt on the power lines turns to mud, which conducts electricity and in some cases, causes fire.
Silicon Valley Power experienced a system-wide power quality event at 10:53pm on Friday, October 14th. Voltage was 89% for 24 cycles.

Several power quality events rippled across the Bay Area today before the start of the Independence Day holiday weekend. On Thursday, June 30th at ~11:37 AM a system-wide power quality event occurred in the Santa Clara area which resulted in utility voltage sagging to 38% of normal for nearly 8 cycles (more than a tenth of a second) which caused large local impacts to residential and business operations.
As a follow up to the Power Quality Event this morning, Silicon Valley Power crews found substation damage to a SVP substation with evidence of bird activity at the fault. The damage has been isolated from the system.
Below is an actual voltage & capture from 6/30/16 11:30 AM event showing the before, during and after waveform. Roughly half the load on this circuit was interrupted.
