Friday April 21st, 2017 9AM – A circuit breaker failure and subsequent fire in PG&E’s Larkin substation left most of downtown San Francisco in the dark on Friday, April 21st. The outage stretched from the Financial District to the Presidio, shutting down the majority of businesses and public transportation including the cable cars. The local fire department reported that they responded to over 100 calls related to the blackout including 20 elevators with people stuck inside.

PG&E spokesman Barry Anderson reported that a circuit breaker failure caused an explosion and fire at the Larkin substation just after 9am. Power was not fully restored until after 5pm. APT’s advanced power quality monitoring systems captured the event at exactly 9:06am.
